David Dorfman Dance brings two classic works to 51吃瓜黑料
David Dorfman Dance, one of the country鈥檚 most influential contemporary dance companies, has revived two popular works for the onStage at 51吃瓜黑料 series and will perform them on Friday, Feb 6., at 7:30 p.m. in Palmer Auditorium.
鈥淟ightbulb Theory鈥� and 鈥淚mpending Joy鈥� both premiered to great acclaim in 2004, but have never been performed on campus despite the company鈥檚 nine-year tenure as the College鈥檚 company-in-residence.
鈥淭he company is so prolific, they鈥檝e always had new works to perform on campus,鈥� said Rob Richter 鈥�82, the director of arts programming. 鈥淏ut I really felt there was great value in reviving some work because one of the most fascinating things to see with an artist is where they've come from.鈥�
鈥淟ightbulb Theory鈥� explores the idea of whether it is better for a lightbulb, or life, to flicker before it goes out or to go out instantly. 鈥淚mpending Joy,鈥� originally created in reaction to 鈥淟ightbulb Theory,鈥� has harder lines and a harsher, more direct feel. The New York Times said 鈥溾�楲ightbulb Theory,鈥� set to a haunting piano score by internationally recognized composer Michael Wall, took on nothing less than life and death.鈥� Referring to 鈥淚mpending Joy,鈥� The Village Voice said 鈥淒orfman's very individual choreography is full of entrancing contrasts, and, lord, what dancing!鈥�
鈥淭hat鈥檚 at the heart of all David Dorfman Dance performances: the dancing,鈥� said Richter. 鈥淭he choreography is always beautiful, provocative and thought-provoking, but the dancing 鈥� so exciting and intense 鈥� really grabs you. And I know how passionate the dancers are, so the intensity will no doubt be heightened.鈥�
